Matching Sets

matching sets fashion story

After spending a weekend celebrating the 75th anniversary of Le Sirenuse and watching the chicest women hanging out in their matching shirt/short combos, I decided I needed a set like this in my life. These women were wearing Emporio Sirenuse, who make a great silk set in collaboration with artist Louis Barthélemy: the shorts were short but not too, the blouse had long sleeves and a Nehru collar, and was long enough that it covered up a lot of the shorts, almost like a minidress, but super comfortable. There’s something about everything matching that just looks super intentional and pulled together, and going into summer when holiday lunches can be as much of an affair as dinner, but have an added pressure—be chic without relying on the evening wardrobe—this is my solution. And don’t forget they also work as single pieces. In my deep dive since, well, yesterday, I’ve found a whole world I didn’t know existed. Sure, I love me a cotton top and short set that are basically pajamas, but worn with confidence and a smart sandal/shoe can look anything but bedwear. Below are some of my favorites. —Yolanda

1. Grace Kelly would definitely have sported this in To Catch a Thief, so if you’re heading to the Cote d’Azur, this is a great option. (Top and Shorts

2. As mentioned above, this Emporio Sirenuse set (Top and Shorts) is terribly chic, easy to wear together or as separates, and can easily translate from beach to cocktail.

3. This black silk short set is so effortlessly elegant, and you probably could go straight to bed after dinner. (Shorts here)

4. Is 1960s Brigitte Bardot in the South of France on your moodboard this summer? If so, this set is perfect. (Top and Shorts) It’s also available in an adorable candy stripe

5. This set is something you could just drape yourself in, perfect for throwing on and looking great. (Top and Shorts)

6. WNU has definitely perfected the oversized button-up, so if you’re looking for a more slouchy but still cool look, their linen sets are so elegant and available in an array of colors.

7. An elevated take on the boxer short, this silk set is the perfect mix of masculine and feminine. The shorts are also available in a longer, Bermuda-style length which we love. (Top and Shorts)

8. An elevation from the classic chambray shirt we keep grabbing in our closet, this Zimmerman set is very chic, and definitely more comfortable than jean shorts. (Top and Shorts)

9. A very chic boho short suit perfect for throwing on and looking put together. (Jacket and Shorts)

In a light cotton poplin that only gets softer and more perfectly worn in with each wear, this Tekla set is technically PJ’s, but who really cares? (Top and Shorts)

This cool, kelly-green nylon set is the ideal way to dress up without sacrificing any comfort. Also thanks to its utilitarian fabric, you won’t need to worry about wearing this to the beach.

Another iteration of the masculine button-up/boxer short combination, the thin stripe on this is super elegant and really does look great over a bikini or on its own. (Top and Shorts)

We love the pattern on this cropped linen set.

We love the green embroidery on this set, which works equally as good as separates. (Top and Shorts)

A great cover-up alternative, this black broderie set is a very chic way to beat the heat. (Top and Shorts)

Available in an array of colors (we especially love the hot pink), this set by Leset is great, with a cotton shirt, and an easy pair of elasticated shorts. You can always pair it with the shorts version of their iconic carpenter pants. (Top and Shorts)
