Originally designed for exactly what the name implies, barn jackets were built for people who needed to move: through mud, over fences, on horseback. Sturdy enough to take a beating with a loose enough cut to actually function, their deep pockets, slightly longer hems, and structured shape make them workhorses on a farm and just as useful in less pastoral environments.
Like their close cousin the chore coat, they feel equally at home on an estate in the Scottish Highlands, a ranch in the South Texas Plains—or, you know, on a Brooklyn street. For spring, they’re an especially great transitional layer, but as a travel piece they work in all seasons: thrown on for a cold flight or in an over-air-conditioned restaurant, and they somehow look even better slightly rumpled when pulled out of a suitcase.
1. Veronica Beard Barn Jacket – More appropriate for Barneys (RIP) than an actual barn, this Italian calfskin suede version is more city than country, with dramatic oversized pockets.
2. WNU Delon Jacket – We love the cuffs, which roll back to reveal a contrast corduroy lining, plus the satisfyingly roomy patch pockets with ample stowage space.
3. Uniqlo Barn Short Jacket – A steal that looks way more expensive than it is! The double-entry pockets that are accessible from the top and side are especially useful, and the gusseted pleat on the back gives a nice A-line shape and plenty of breathing room.
4. Levi’s Barn Jacket – A striped denim number with both zip and button closers, for when you really want to steel yourself from the elements.
5. Carhartt OG Detroit Jacket – Of everything on the list, this has probably seen the most actual barns. We prefer the men’s cuts, which are roomier and better for layering something underneath.
6. Banana Republic Barn Coat – The vintage-inspired clip hardware is so chic, and the cotton flannel lining will keep you nice and warm without adding any bulk.
7. Patagonia Point Reyes Coat – Named for the NorCal headland that’s home to countless dairy ranches, this rugged cotton canvas coat was designed for durability, though looks just as right worn to work, even if your job is more figuratively herding cattle.
8. Barbour Cropped Beadnell Waxed Jacket – If the barn jacket has a patron saint, it’s Barbour. They’ve been perfecting coats for the British elements since the 1890s, and the Beadnell remains one of their most beloved silhouettes. We especially love this cropped version, which feels modern thanks to its proportions and colorful collar.
9. J.Crew Linen Barn Jacket – A warm-weather spin that’s more breathable and tailored, still with the deep pockets we love.
10. Filson Barn Coat – The floral print may read daintier, but don’t be fooled—Filson pieces are practically indestructible.
11. Alex Mill Chiltern Jacket – Inspired by a hunting jacket scored in a Parisian vintage shop, this waxed cotton option comes in a handful of excellent colors that manage to look lived in straight off the rack.
12. LL.Bean Field Jacket – You really can’t beat L.L. Bean’s classic American utility or price point.

Dôen Pascual Jacket – In true Dôen fashion, this is a romantic take on the barn jacket—more fit for a garden party than a hoedown.
Sézane Gabin Jacket – Anything Sézane is a shortcut to French girl style, and this relaxed layer could make anyone look fresh off horseback in Aquitaine.
Marine Layer Waxed Barn Jacket – A waxed canvas option with a softer hand, from a brand that makes everything feel perfectly broken in from the start.
