Just Back From…Palermo

I must be honest that sometimes I do zero homework before I go somewhere–especially when I’m on back-to-back trips. In mid-June, I found myself arriving in Palermo with only my hotels figured out and literally nothing else. While it’s not ideal, I do think it’s important to put myself in a vulnerable traveler position and have that anxiety of WTF, I have no idea where to get lunch, where to wander around, what I’m supposed to do. The last time I was in Palermo was in 2015, for just one night, and we stayed in a very weird place. For this trip, literally everyone I asked about where to stay had little conviction about their suggestions, although there was a unanimous cry to try the Villa Igiea, if I could afford it or get a media rate. A beloved historic hotel that first opened in 1900, it received a thoughtful restoration by the Rocco Forte group and reopened in 2021. I’d been wanting to check it out, and luckily they were able to fit us in. We loved our one night there. (You can read our Guest Book here.)
