In short… A grand yet graceful retreat in the heart of Vienna. Housed in a 19th-century former bank on Petersplatz, Rosewood Vienna captures the city’s elegant duality—steeped in history yet quietly modern.
The surroundings… At the corner of Petersplatz and Tuchlauben, the Rosewood Vienna sits in Vienna’s most polished pocket—with Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta, Prada, and Hermès as neighbors, and the baroque dome of St. Peter’s Church rising nearby. It’s a location that hums by day with café chatter and boutique browsing, then quiets at dusk into an almost cinematic stillness.
The backstory… Opened in 2022, Rosewood Vienna marks the brand’s first foray into the German-speaking world. Local architecture firm A2K and London-based Alexander Waterworth reimagined the 1800s bank building with reverence, restoring its marble corridors and ornate staircases, adding art by Austrian creators and bespoke furniture that bridges centuries. The effect is deeply Viennese: opulent but soulful, historic yet refreshingly light.
The vibe… Elegant and composed, quietly romantic. I loved how marble, brass, and dark wood softened the light throughout. Moving through the hotel felt almost like a waltz — room by room, connecting the buildings, a feeling of old and new Vienna melting together complementing each other almost like the harmony of a waltz swirling.

The rooms… Each of the 99 rooms and suites at Rosewood Vienna has its own view, and the layouts seem to follow that logic. If there’s a window in a bathroom that calls for a freestanding tub, there’s a tub. If a narrow wall feels like it needs a small stool leaned against it, there’s a stool. That’s often the beauty of original bones — you can’t reinvent every square foot. And while the rooms differ in layout, the design stays coherent throughout: the same fabrics, the same marble, the same wood, the same palette.
We stayed in a Premier Room overlooking the beautiful shopping street Tuchlauben and its subtle flow. Despite our grand dame neighbors — Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, Miu Miu — there was none of the usual big-city, polished buzz. Like the rest of Vienna, it hummed with a quieter kind of sophistication.
I loved the small, personal details in our room that had been thoughtfully considered — the light-blue stitched initials on the pillows, a few antique objects on the dresser, and — most importantly to me — the lighting. Soft and warm, it made the room feel immediately inviting.
Each evening at turndown, a Manner wafer was left on the pillow. Such a simple, nostalgic gesture — one that took me straight back to childhood (now passed along and shared with our daughter as well). I loved how this unmistakably Viennese sweet, so unpretentious, felt perfectly at home in a five-star setting. For those drawn to something more imperial, the five Houses offer expansive, residential-style suites with a sense of home, along with cinematic views of St. Peter’s dome and the Stephansdom spire.

The food & drink… The hotel’s heart lies on the rooftop, at Neue Hoheit Brasserie, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the restaurant or out on the terrace tucked above the historic streets. The kitchen gives a modern spin to Austrian classics—think golden schnitzel with crisp cucumber salad or caviar with chopped egg—in a space that feels both refined and relaxed. Upstairs, the Rooftop Bar is Vienna’s most elegant perch for cocktails and conversation, the view stretching over copper rooftops and church domes that glow at sunset.
Outside the hotel, wander to Caphe Lalot — which quickly became our daily favorite for its mix of Viennese and Vietnamese flavors. The fragrant curry omelet and the rose-guava soda alone are worth crossing town for. And of course, no visit to Vienna is complete without the original Sachertorte at Café Sacher—rich with history and the scent of chocolate and diplomacy.
The wellness… The Asaya Spa offers calm and warmth in equal measure. The treatments here draw on alpine herbs and rituals — I had a full body massage which is one of the best I’ve had in Europe by far, it felt like the therapist knew every bone and history of my body, it was such a grounding and soothing pause after days of wandering wide through Vienna’s many cultural treasures. The spa is quite intimate in size, two treatment rooms, sauna and steam and a relaxing area, a small sanctuary above the city.

Is it kid-friendly? Yes: families are made comfortable from the moment they arrive — we traveled with our six-year-old daughter, who was greeted like a little VIP with her own Rosewood passport to collect stamps, a lion-embellished wooden room key, and colored pencils. The staff were wonderfully attentive, making even the most polished spaces feel easy and welcoming.
Extra tip goes to… The concierge, who seemed to know exactly what we were looking for — and how to make our time in Vienna special while traveling with our daughter — tipped us off to the city’s historic baths, Amalienbad and Jörgerbad. With an already full itinerary of art, cafés, and culture, we never made it there this time—but it’s firmly on the list for our next visit.
Be sure to… Spend an afternoon browsing J. & L. Lobmeyr for hand-blown crystal, Zur Schwäbischen Jungfrau for monogrammed linens, or Altmann & Kühne for miniature chocolates in patterned boxes. Pause at Zum Schwarzen Kameel for an open sandwich and a glass of Grüner Veltliner, and if you’re visiting in winter, linger by the Christmas markets before returning to Rosewood’s rooftop for a nightcap above the spires.
From The Nutcracker and the shimmer of the Opera Ball to concerts beneath frescoed ceilings, the city wears its heritage lightly yet with pride. Spend an afternoon at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, or wander The Albertina to see masterpieces from Monet, Matisse, and Picasso—its grand Habsburg rooms overlooking the city, where the past still seems to breathe. For a glimpse of living tradition, visit the Spanische Hofreitschule to watch the Lipizzaner horses perform their graceful ballet. In softer weather, the Burggarten and Volksgarten become green sanctuaries — the city’s quiet counterpoint to all that gold and grandeur.
Parting words… Rosewood Vienna distills the essence of the city—imperial grace reimagined for modern travelers. Here, the old structure hums softly with history, while every detail feels intentional — a seamless stay in Vienna’s historic heart.
Date of stay… June 2025
