In short… A beautiful French family estate château turned vineyard estate and hotel in the heart of the Luberon.

The surroundings… Arriving in Luberon from Marseilles, the drive is just about an hour on winding Provencal roads until you reach Le Domaine de Fontenille. It’s a super quaint and understated approach, with vineyards flanking the property of Fontenille peering through the trees from the gates. The nearest town is Lauris, but once you’ve arrived you could be in the absolute middle of nowhere. It’s incredibly serene, a total Provençal oasis: green grounds, spanning both vineyards and vast manicured gardens, with a hedge surrounded pool, rose garden, and a Tuileries-esque fountain.

The vibe… Originally an 18th-century family home, Fontenille has always had a history of winemaking attached to the domaine. It was officially opened as a hotel in 2016 by fashion/art world veterans Frédéric Biousse and Guillaume Foucher with LVMH purchasing a stake in the collection in 2025; however, the property still feels incredibly homelike and hasn’t lost the classic feel of a French countryside family estate. (Biousse and Foucher have over 10 additional properties in their portfolio, spanning France and Spain.) The rooms are warm but not over-designed, and all of the common rooms of the property are elegantly decorated with antiques from nearby brocantes and flea markets. My favorite was the sitting room just off of the bar. With a cozy fireplace and shelves filled with books for guests to read throughout their stay, it felt like an incredibly chic and comfortable living room in the home of a well-traveled friend.

The rooms… are simple, restrained, and comfortable, with touches of French antiques that were probably found at a nearby brocante. The bathrooms are big and modern with Suzanne Kaffuman toiletries. In the mini-fridge there is delicious grape juice made at the vineyard, and large windows look out onto the properties’ pristine gardens, with beautiful Provençal light pouring in.

The food & drink… The food was delicious and the menu focused on seasonal and local ingredients. The lunch menu was Mediterranean-inspired with references to traditional South of France cuisine—I especially loved the panisses (chickpea fries from Marseilles) which we ate on the front patio with a delicious glass of Fontenille rosé. The dinner menu was inspired around the harvest and each course was served with a different wine from the Domaine, full of refreshing interpretations of typical French fare. At breakfast the next morning, I had one of the best croissants ever…so don’t skip that!

The wellness… While I didn’t experience any of the wellness on property, there are lots of options for those looking for a more wellness-focused visit. They offer in-room treatments incorporating Suzanne Kauffman products, as well as treatments in their cabin in the gardens. They have regular outdoor yoga classes and guests are invited to walk the property and through the sprawling vineyards for a real French workout. While it was a bit too chilly to swim when I was there in late September, they have a beautiful outdoor pool that’s perfect for a visit in the summertime, or in the warmer weeks of shoulder season!

Is it kid-friendly? Yes! I saw a few families travelling with kids during my visit, and thanks to the excess of open space, there are plenty of places to run around and enjoy the countryside.

Be sure to… Take a walk around the property. When visiting in late September, I was blessed with great weather, and the grounds were basking in sunlight. There’s a beautiful rose garden to explore earlier in the season, as well as another garden lined with cypress trees and chairs by the fountain—two perfect places to sit down and enjoy a book. In typical French countryside fashion there was also a petanque court nestled in the trees, which looked ideal. Also don’t miss a tour of their vineyard across the road! It was super informative and fun to learn more about the wine from the region, the history of the domaine, and of course, to have a taste!

Parting words… Le Domaine de Fontenille is a beautiful French family estate turned boutique property and Provençal escape, perfect for a relaxing and restful visit to the South of France in summer or shoulder season.
