In short… A terribly chic and swanky property in the heart of Manhattan’s Midtown, featuring grand rooms and some of the most elegant glassware in the city.
The surroundings… Right on West 52nd St. between 5th and 6th Aves., The Baccarat is incredibly well-located, especially for those looking to spend time uptown. You’re also directly across from MoMa, a bonus for art lovers visiting the city for the first time!
The vibe… When you arrive at the hotel, you head upstairs to the second-floor lobby, a peaceful refuge from the noise of the city below. There’s definitely an on-brand opulent vibe, with lots of red accents and crystal chandeliers, but it’s not over the top.
The rooms… Crisp white walls, elegant moldings and sleek furniture that’s not just attractive, but functional. My suite was huge, with floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out onto the busy street below. Beautiful chevron-wooden floors and a thoughtfully placed pin board by the door featuring wellness offerings and hotel news were nice touches. Obviously the mini-bar was stashed with Baccarat glassware. The bedroom featured a magnificent wooden canopy frame bed (a dream of mine) and elegant modern furnishings. It didn’t feel staged or like a caricature of itself (which some NY hotels get wrong), but rather a space that is comfortable, practical, and beautifully designed, with lovely framed Baccarat sketches throughout. The marble bathroom had both a bath and shower and an inset medicine cabinet that I loved for hiding unsightly toiletries.
The wellness… The spa, a partnership with La Mer, is spacious, with a huge indoor pool—a luxury in NYC. Guests are welcome to sign up for movement and breathwork classes, and can access their Technogym-stocked gym.
Food and drink… I only stayed for one night, but packed it in, enjoying drinks in the busy bar—called simply The Bar—and dinner in the lobby restaurant, the Grand Salon, which served delicious classics like Caesar salad, steak and a great burger.
Don’t miss… Cocktails in The Bar. The high ceilings remind me of old uptown mansions, complete with glass Baccarat chandeliers and art all over the walls. Being on the 2nd floor (where the lobby is located) buffers you from the noise of Madison Ave, but it’s lively enough that you won’t want to leave after just one drink—plus, again, the glassware is ridiculously elegant: Baccarat, of course.
Is it kid-friendly? Yes! The property welcomes kids and those travelling with families, and there are a few adjoining rooms.
Parting words… The Baccarat is a great midtown option. The rooms are especially inviting for longer stays, thanks to their spaciousness and incredible closet space.
