In short… Bishop’s Lodge, Auberge Collection is a beautiful bucolic retreat with an all-season pool and access to hiking trails—it’s both close to Santa Fe and a world apart.
The surroundings… Set in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains just 10 minutes from the center of Santa Fe, it’s ideal for hikers and nature-seekers, as there are over 10 different trails into the mountains that depart from the hotel.
The backstory… In 1853, Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy (hence the name) purchased the property for $80 as a peaceful retreat. He built a modest house and small chapel, which still exists on the land today and is open all day for visitors. It is beautifully preserved and strikingly different from the rest of the hotel architecture.
The vibe… Beautiful brown adobe buildings house the different guest rooms and casitas that are spread out throughout the mountain. Everywhere is walkable, but golf carts are available to pick you up if needed. Different shades of brown wood, leathers and an array of tiles decorate the Skyfire Restaurant and bar area. It’s very clear you are in Santa Fe, and in the mountains. Fireplaces and firepits are everywhere and add to the overall cozy “rancho” vibe.

The rooms… Spacious and extremely well designed. I love a room that’s conceived to evoke a sense of place without being in your face and kitchy. The fabrics, rugs, cushions, even bathroom amenities give you the chicest version of Santa Fe.
The wellness… There’s a large gym which I didn’t visit, although I did take a great morning yoga class in a converted ballroom. There’s also a beautiful pool that was heated throughout the winter—if my kids had been with me, we would have spent the whole day in there. The Stream Dance Spa is a full-service spa offering everything you would expect and need.

The food… I tried the bar food for a late lunch, as well as the breakfast. Both were in keeping with the Southwestern culinary tradition, with a touch of Mexican inspiration. Bison chile nachos, Santa Fe mezze (with piñon dip) and queso were all part of the bar menu, and my poblano omelette with green chile and poblano sauce at breakfast was absolutely delicious.

Extra tip goes to… Marama from the pre-arrival and concierge team. She was so friendly with my cousin’s dogs and so warm and welcoming with us.
Be sure to… leave time to explore one of the hiking trails.
Parting words… This hotel is quite expensive, and there were a few glitches in the service, which I thought were not really reflective of the price. I wrote an email to complain after we had left and they kindly invited me back and were really apologetic. Even with that, I would love to return and see it when it is covered in snow and use it as a base for skiing.
Date of stay… December 2025
