The Gleneagles Townhouse, Edinburgh

In short…  The Gleneagles Townhouse is an elegant, chic and very centrally located hotel from the owners of the legendary Gleneagles countryside retreat—a very welcome and relatively new addition to the city.

The vibe… Gleneagles Townhouse, in the former Bank of Scotland, went through an incredibly thoughtful renovation–successfully nailing the “it feels like it’s always been here” feeling, along with being fresh and just modern enough. Located in the center of things on St. Andrew Square, it’s easy to get everywhere, but it’s also so good that you might not want to leave.

The rooms… Lots of antiques keep it within its historical vernacular, but a clever palette takes it out of stuffy and modernizes it just right. Our bathroom had a tub with a view onto St. Andrew Square, and we were pleased to see no single-use plastics. There are just 33 rooms, so it definitely has a cozy vibe.

The food and drink… We loved The Spence, their all-day restaurant—very market-to-table, with an impressive seasonal crudité (beyond the expected veg, this one had snap peas and several varieties of radishes), and the menu was smart and uncomplicated. There’s a rooftop bar called Lamplighters, which serves great cocktails in a very chic room, playing great music that leaned more ‘90s club, always a favorite of mine.

The wellness…  It has one of the best hotel gyms–very spacious with lots of equipment choices and a very cool cryo chamber and infrared sauna.

Date of stay… March 16, 2023

Would love to see the most recent Dispatches from Edinburgh (Clara’s on your Substack Yolo) available for paid subscribers here. The travel updates and continued input and reports is why I come to your site. I also wanted to read the last emails in full about your houses in Medoc, reasoning for which to keep and sell, tips etc. But alas they are behind another paywall.

Hi Susan, We actually incorporate all of the content from the Dispatches into the Edinburgh Black Book so it all lives in one place. I’m sorry we don’t have all of our content in one place for now–but I’m working on it! Happy to comp you on the Substack so you can read it–I know it’s annoying. Doing that now. Thanks for being patient with us!
