Our Rome Hotels List

I’m certainly not alone in my love for Rome. I first came when I was 16, as my friend’s +1 on her family trip. I don’t remember the hotel we stayed in, but it was definitely fancy and near the Spanish Steps. The next time I came, I was about 18 and visiting a friend who lived on the 12th floor of an apartment building that had no elevator. Perhaps that scared me off, because my next memories started some 10 years later. When Clara was a baby, we somehow got a deal at the Hassler, then over the years we have stayed at the Locarno, JK Roma, G-Rough, the Vilon, the de’Ricci, and more recently, the Bulgari. (Because I was usually writing about these hotels, I was staying in places that were either new, or there was something new to say about them.) And then we fell so in love with the city that we ended up renting an apartment four years ago. Being here so often, I’ve had a front-row seat (literally, in the case of my soon to open Casa JK neighbor) to all of the exciting hotel openings in the last few years—small, design-centric boutique hotels to palatial splurgy ones, and the hits just keep coming. I’m also so pleased to include some real gems on this list, many of them discoveries from my morning walks—the old-school places that don’t have marketing departments!

We organized this a little differently than we did our hotel lists for London, New York, or Paris. Typically, we arrange them by neighborhood, but since Rome is so small and most people want to stay in the center, we decided to organize this by style/vibe/price. We’ve also flagged properties that fit into our “Costa Meno” category—in this case, less than 300 euros per night—with a CM, and family-oriented properties with an F. And for those of you who want to live more like locals (and no, we aren’t including Airbnb in here) and actually have some space to cook up some of the bounty you see in the market, we have that covered, too. Hope this gives you plenty of inspiration for your next trip, whether you picture yourself in a chic little Roman pied à terre or in grand apartments that once belonged to the Borghese family. –Yolanda

New World

These hotels—many of which have opened in just the last few years—range from modern designs that read younger and cooler (where you can definitely order an iced latte) and modern riffs on classical themes.

Casa Monti

Antico Albergo del Sole – A stone’s throw from the Pantheon, the rooms are on the basic end of things, but still molto carino and well-priced for the location.

Casa Monti – A stylish and playfully decorated boutique hotel that reflects the character of its artistic and historically rich surroundings. Locals flock to its rooftop bar for drinks and dinner, which feels refreshingly young and alive. (Read our full guest book here)

Casa Tre Sarte has tastefully designed rooms in the Monti area; you can also rent the whole house. It’s owned by a couple who make really lovely clothing. (CM)
