In short… A secluded retreat on its own island in Udai Sagar Lake, where English country estate charm meets Rajasthani grandeur.
The surroundings… Accessible only by ferry, Raffles Udaipur feels like a world unto itself, set amid manicured gardens alive with exotic birds with uninterrupted views of the lake stretching in every direction.
The backstory… Built as a luxurious escape, the hotel takes inspiration from both British colonial elegance and Udaipur’s royal heritage, offering a tranquil contrast to Rajasthan’s livelier cities.
The vibe… Regal yet relaxed. From the moment you arrive at Raffles Udaipur, hospitality feels effortless with rose petals drifting from the rooftops, a butler-led welcome, and an atmosphere that makes you feel both at home and entirely transported.
The rooms… Spacious and serene, designed for lingering. They feel more like private apartments, with grand four-poster beds, rich textiles, ornate bathtubs, and a private balcony to watch the birds swirl over the formal gardens and the lake beyond.
The wellness… The spa is a sanctuary where I had the Raffles Signature Massage, and the sense of restoration continues outdoors, whether it’s a sunrise trek to a hilltop temple with sweeping views of Udaipur or a quiet moment by the lake.
The food & drink… elevated Rajasthani flavors with global influences unfold in decadent spreads of tender duck breast, goat, river sole, and fresh prawns, served in settings that make every meal feel like an occasion.
Extra tip goes to… Rajesh Namby, the General Manager, who knows how to throw a spectacular party and makes every guest feel like royalty.
Be sure to… Take a boat out on the lake at dawn. The stillness, the reflections, pure magic.
Parting words… A place that invites you to slow down, look around, and take it all in.
Date of stay… October 2024
