Hotel Fouquet’s, New York

In short… Hotel Fouquet’s is a chic, intimate hideaway in Tribeca that has a great restaurant and bar and attracts a cool crowd.

The vibe… The sunlit corner entrance of Hotel Fouquet’s New York definitely reads stylish apartment lobby, given how tasteful and personal the decor is. The palette is very pretty—dusty rose, rust, mustard and pistachio, and the furniture is elegant but not stuffy—velvet couches with pillows, and coffee tables with sweet little flower arrangements. Bookshelves lined with a clever mix of well-curated books and objets. The staff is young, friendly and confident—I certainly walked in and out a lot, as I was there with my dog Prune. I also ran into so many people I knew—friends who were staying there, acquaintances who were having lunch meetings and at the bar as well. It feels very much like you’re in the right place—the last time I felt this way at a hotel was at the Sunset Tower in LA.

The rooms… Very comfortable, with great light from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The decor is quiet, but chic; it’s a fine line between being too basic and a design that overwhelms the room, and the room had just enough tasteful details to feel special. The bathroom is quite big, with brass and marble fixtures. Prune appreciated the cozy bed set up for her, and the toy croissant they gifted her felt very au point.

Food & Drink… I had been here before for a holiday dinner with friends when the hotel had just opened, and another time for drinks. The dining room and the bar are both dimly lit and very sexy. We had dinner with a friend one night, and it was excellent—a very classic menu. We loved our shrimp cocktail and escargots, and our fish entrees were great. The sommelier enjoyed our challenge to him to select the best value on the list, and the wine was incredible. As for other meals, we tried out breakfast in the room—it came within 10 minutes, and the eggs and avocado toast on sourdough were great.

The wellness/spa… The gym is very well set up with lots of Technogym equipment, and it’s operated by the Dog Pound, a culty Soho gym. You can work out solo, book one of their trainers, or in our case, we had our own trainer come in. I was surprised by how real their spa was. So often, a smaller boutique hotel will have a spa that feels forced, like an afterthought. They actually have five treatment rooms (my massage was excellent), and a sauna, steam room, and small indoor pool. They use Biologique Recherche in their facial treatments.

Be sure to… Grab a coffee from Interlude, then take a walk over to Pier 26 on the Hudson River and on to the Tide Deck. It’s the closest to nature that I’ve felt in downtown NYC!
