Best for… A chic bolthole in a quiet neighborhood but just minutes from the bustle of the center, perfect for a weekend getaway.
The vibe… A 19th-century aristocratic villa and garden in a residential area of town, which was recently taken over by the owners of the Hotel Sant Francesc and the Can Ferrereta in Mallorca. Villa Soro feels like you’re staying in someone’s very grand home—public spaces with cozy fireplaces and couches and a clever edit of books and magazines. The decor leans classic chic.

The rooms… Well appointed and very comfortable–more classic than vibe-y. Our bedroom had great light and a nice black-and-white tiled bathroom.
The food and drink… The hotel doesn’t have a proper restaurant, but they do a full breakfast, and they have a “delicatessen” that you can order a nice edit of snacks from. Betty, the hotel’s bartender, made a masterful gin and tonic and martini, served with the best nut mix—a perfect combo of Marcona almonds, cashews, corn nuts and peanuts. The next morning when I called down for black coffee (which we both prefer to the standard hotel room Nespresso setup), a very sweet woman bringing up the coffee also had two glasses of champagne and a little cheesecake with a candle in it—since they knew it was Matt’s birthday. It is definitely one of the most thoughtful gestures we’ve experienced in a hotel. Since we aren’t normally breakfast eaters (we have to give something up with all the eating and drinking we do!), we missed out on the breakfast, but some Yolo/Wm Brown followers who happened to be staying at Villa Soro reported that it was great.

Be sure to… Hop on the hotel’s bikes, get on the bike path and head towards the sea. Within five minutes you’ll be watching the surfers and volleyball players on Zurriola Beach, with the backdrop of the city beyond. I always have a little travel anxiety when I know I don’t have much time in a place—and pressure to figure it out right away—but this bike ride cured that. The city bike lanes are great, taking you all along the coast to the beautiful bay and beach of La Concha, and even further, and then throughout the interior of the city, too.
