The Manner Hotel, New York City

In short… A very cool newish opening in Soho that feels fresh, while nodding to timeless midcentury design with luxurious in-room amenities and great guest programming.

The surroundings… Right on Thompson St in Soho, The Manner is incredibly well located. It’s just far enough away from Broadway that it doesn’t feel chaotic, and a 15-minute walk from the center of the West Village so that it still feels neighborhoody. The exterior is grand but not shouty, so you could easily walk past without realizing, and with lots of subways nearby you’re incredibly connected to the rest of the city without feeling like you’re staying in a hub.

The backstory… Located in the building formerly known as the Thompson St. Hotel, The Manner opened last September following a closure and renovation by Milan-based architect Hannes Peer.

The Apartment on the 2nd floor

The vibe… Swanky. When you walk into the lobby, it feels as if you’re entering a very cool midcentury house, possibly in Palm Springs or the Hollywood Hills. The front desk is tucked off to the side, and the lobby is broken up into sections by cool graphic dividers. On the second floor is “The Apartment,” the guest-only space where breakfast and coffee are served, along with all-day snacks and a complimentary daily aperitivo hour from 4-7. Guests are encouraged to make the space their own, and it really feels like your own living room. Large windows allow light to pour into the room, reminding you that you’re in Soho, and indeed not in Palm Springs. The ongoing services in The Apartment throughout the day means it feels very organic and easy, which is rare in NY hotels and something I really appreciated.

The rooms… I stayed in a corner room on the 8th floor with big light-filled windows giving views over downtown. Design-wise, the rooms feel very cool, with lots of red and orange lacquer and thick navy paint, all of which creates a very chill vibe and contrast with the midcentury furnishings and mirrored walls. The room was incredibly comfortable, but the in-room amenities are really what stood out. All of the bath and shower products are by one of my favorite brands, Costa Brazil—fairly niche, so I was over the moon to see them here!—and the towels, robes, and sheets are made by another favorite brand, ANIM, started by Yolo friend and contributor Mina Dilber! It was such a delight to see two smaller brands represented here, really representing the property’s commitment to taste, and well-made products. In the minibar console they also have a really cool selection of glasses, seemingly to encourage in-room hosting. They also have in-room speakers which you can connect to, further adding to the home-y vibe curated in the room.

Dinner at The Otter; aperitivo at The Apartment

The food & drink… On the evening I checked in, I went down to The Apartment to catch a glimpse of their aperitivo, and ended up staying for a drink. It was such a good vibe down there, with complimentary drinks and snacks for guests all laid out on a very cool red lacquer table. This felt like such a treat, especially in NY, and a luxury to think that when staying there you could meet for a drink before dinner without the stress of a reservation and feel like you’re bringing guests into your own house. On my second night, I had an early dinner at their restaurant, The Otter, which was delicious! It’s seafood focused, with highlights including the halibut ceviche and honestly the best Caesar salad I’ve ever had in my life. The cocktails were also great. This place was such a hit—if you’re ever in Soho and looking for an easy place to meet for a drink or restaurant, you should come here. They also have a speakeasy bar called Sloane’s, which was unfortunately closed for a private event when I was there, but it’s meant to be amazing and I will make sure to stop by for a drink next time I’m in the area.

The wellness… While there isn’t a gym on property, they have an affiliation with one nearby, and guests staying at The Manner can be put on the guest list to visit. During check-in, I was also informed that they have a relationship with ClassPass, and that guests can get discounts on classes when staying as well.

Is it pet-friendly? Yes! While I wasn’t staying with Prune (Yolo mascot), she dropped me off with my mom at check-in and the front desk informed me that dogs are allowed everywhere in the hotel, plus they have their own pet menu and will accommodate your pet in your room.

Be sure to… Go for aperitivo in The Apartment! It’s such a welcoming guest experience. If you’re staying in NY for work, it’s honestly a perfect place to meet that feels easy and un-fussy. Also go for a meal at The Otter, which was great and a delicious menu for an easy stop in Soho.

Parting words… The Manner is one of the coolest new hotel openings in the city right now. It feels really retro, chic, and the staff are so nice that it really feels like a home away from home during your stay.

Date of stay… December 16-18, 2025
