The Key West List

In April, I was looking for a last-minute beach vacation for my daughter’s spring break. I needed it to be domestic, but ideally feel a little bit exotic. I also wanted to be pretty sure of warm weather, as previous years’ April trips with kids to Kiawah Island and the North Carolina coast had left us shivering under our beach towels.

Thank you for this. We have just booked at Winslow’s Bungalows for late December and heading into New Years. I am going to check out Fury since we like to be active, and have already booked dinner at Little Pearl and Marquesa. Now I just need to figure out which Hemingway book I am going to read while having my own G&T at sunset.

We stayed at Winslows Bungalows and it was the perfect spot just off of Duval Street. The bonus was our dinner reservations the first night were at Little Pearl–which was our favorite meal in all of Florida over the holiday stay. We had lunch during our stay at El Siboney, and finished another evening with dessert and drinks at Blue Heaven (which we wished we had stopped in for dinner, because it reminded us of casual, but delicious places in the BVI’s).

We found the locals to be hospitable and wanting folks to come be part of the community while we were there. We were given great intel on how to avoid crowds while the cruise ships were in town for the day–and advised to hit “hot spots” when they weren’t in town.

We did stop into the Hemingway house and walked away with new perspective on Hemingway. IMHO, this home is not as lovely as his home in Havana but it was a great stop. It was recommended to us by a few folks to stop in and see the butterflies nature conservancy first thing in the morning, and we rather enjoyed the more low-key activity.

All in all, I would encourage you to get off of Duval street and walk the neighborhoods, have a coffee and walk along piers to see kite boarders. It was a lovely stay!
