In short… Anemomilos Hotel is a family-run (and built!) hotel that put this island on the map when it opened in 1993, with its jaw-dropping cliffside rooms
The vibe… I first saw this hotel some 25 years ago in a magazine, and couldn’t forget the views I’d seen in the photos. When I finally made it, it was everything I’d hoped for and more. Usually I think I’m a seaside person, not a high-up, look out over the sea person—but this changed me. The hotel has 17 suites and studios, situated in two-story buildings all with terraces, a lovely pool (an almost impossible task in a hillside town!), and a restaurant and bar that are open all day and into the evening (also a rarity). Today it is run by Diana, although her father Dimitris, who designed and built the hotel in the ‘90s, is still around, and her little daughter, the next gen, plays in the courtyard. It is great for families—teens or little ones. The pool is perfect for kids, and the location being just a 2-minute walk into town makes it ideal for teens who want to be independent. There are buses that can take you to the beaches, or they’ll call a taxi for you.

The rooms… Our room was literally on the cliff looking out over the sea and the rest of the island, with Sifnos and Milos in the distance. I don’t think I’ve ever had a room with such a view, even from the bathroom—we just sat on the terrace and didn’t want to move. It had a little kitchen area (a fridge, which is great for families who don’t want their kids incurring restaurant charges) with a table and a sitting area, which converts into two beds if needed.
The food and drink… We arrived in the afternoon and had great poolside cocktails and a delicious crudite/hummus plate. Breakfast is included, and their offerings are so generous (coursed out starting with fruit then pastries then cooked eggs or whatever you want) that you could skip lunch. The bartenders make great cocktails.

Be sure to… Take a morning hike (before it gets too hot!) up to the Church of Panagia for the best view over the island. You can read more about the island here.
Date of stay… August 24-26, 2023
