Last summer, we rounded up our favorite dressier caftans—the kind that you could pack for a beach trip or wear just as easily to a wedding or long lunch. Now that we’re deep in the season where all we can think about is a warm getaway, we’re revisiting these workhorse wardrobe staples, this time focusing on caftans that could feel just as right for a dinner party at home with an extra layer or two as they do tossed into a carry-on for a sunny escape.
Xirena Tabitha Dress – This super flowy slipover dress is relaxed without feeling overly casual, and is simple enough that the right accessories can really dress it up if needed.
Ann Mashburn Shirtdress – We’ve been fans of their blouses forever, so this shirtdress is an obvious winner in our book (plus it’s 50% off right now!). They styled it with heels on their site, but we could just as easily see it with tights and boots in winter or sandals poolside in summer.
LemLem Caftan – Leave it to supermodel Liya Kebede to design something that you can throw over your head, yet still gives you shape. We love the navy colorway of this v-neck caftan, and even more so because the brand works with artisans to preserve traditional weaving practices in Ethiopia, where all their pieces are made.
Lisa Corti Radha Caftan – More of a splurge, but these 100% silk dresses in the best prints have come on countless trips with us, and have held up so well.
Tulsi Shop Tibetan Caftan – From our favorite store in Puglia, this super-elongating neckline is so flattering—plus it has pockets!
Two NY Pocket Caftan – Handloomed opaque cotton offers enough coverage to keep you protected from the sun, but also means it’s thick enough to be season-agnostic when layered over pants.
Two NY Metallic Silk Caftan – Another favorite from Two NY—how chic is this navy pinstripe silk?
Thierry Colson Rachel Dress – The kind of splurge that you can justify because it would come in handy if your seatmate on the plane invited you to some fabulous gala.
Bode Kaftan – This heavyweight wool crepe robe is fastened with silk tassels at the opening—we like that you can wear it as a dress if it’s fully buttoned up, or open as a duster over trousers or a slip dress.
Natalie Martin Sammie Dress – Such a great color that really works in any season.
Dôen Monique Dress – Just enough color comes through in the floral motifs, finished with gold lamé embroidery, and a hand-beaded fringe hem. We love the exaggerated ‘70s-esque sleeves and matching belt that can be tied a number of ways.
Natalie Martin Alice Dress – The metallic chiffon fabric has enough bling that you don’t even need to throw on jewelry with this one.
Yali Milano Robe – This gorgeous velvet robe with handmade satin frog closures is exactly what we’d want to wear to a dinner party in subzero temps.
Vita Kin Bibi Dress – The decorative stitching is incredible on these 100% linen dresses handmade in Kyiv.
Marrakshi Life Touareg Dress – A little bit louder than what we’d normally reach for, but the colors on this feel right at home in Marrakech (where they’re made) or Mexico, or just on a dreary winter day at home when you need to transport yourself somewhere sunnier.
Isabel Marant Veona Dress – Just wear with boots now and bare legs come June.
Lanhtropy Athina Dress – The puff sleeves on this linen shirtdress make it feel just a touch more dressed up, but not too stuffy to wear over a suit with enough buttons undone.
Marrakshi Life Caftan in Sand – Such a simple and elegant shape that you feel good in not just for the flattering cut, but also because they are made to order by local artisans in a zero-waste atelier in Morocco.
