In short… A classic NYC hotel right on Central Park South with old bones and modern comforts, perfect for a first-time visit to The Big Apple.

The surroundings… One major plus about the Ritz-Carlton Central Park is the location. As we explored in our NYC Hotels List, where you stay can shape your entire trip, especially if you’re traveling with family or a group with diverse interests. What I loved about this hotel is how connected you feel to all parts of the city. While first-timers often default to midtown, being on Central Park South puts you just as close to downtown as you’d be near Times Square, without the chaotic energy. You get a mix of Upper East Side sophistication and Madison Avenue buzz, plus subway lines that shoot you straight downtown on both East and West Sides—meaning you’re mobile up, down, and across the grid.

The vibe… Past the grand exterior, incredibly friendly staff usher you into a big lobby. The walls are adorned with vintage Horst P. Horst-style photographs, which nod to New York’s glory days. The recent renovation keeps things fresh, but classic touches remain: a wood-paneled lounge, gorgeous paneled elevators, and lots of marble. Upstairs, long, bright hallways feel more like your very own UES apartment building than a hotel—elegant and not overdone.

The rooms… My room on the 5th floor overlooked the Central Park South entrance, with large windows perfect for people-watching below. The rooms are generously sized and full of light, with decor that lets the views shine. My marble bathroom was a treat, featuring lovely Diptyque amenities and more great photography. I especially appreciated the silver toothbrush holder and jewelry tray—rare, thoughtful touches.

The food & drink… I didn’t sit down for a proper meal, but I did check out the Club Lounge for coffee. Access is included with higher room categories or can be purchased, and it’s an excellent resource for visitors traveling with family or larger groups, as New York’s notoriously challenging reservations systems (and prices) often make it hard to plan for groups and kids. The space is super open, comfortable, and genuinely useful if you don’t want to plan all your meals in advance.

The wellness… I tried the new La Prairie Spa’s “Glass Skin Facial” and left truly glowing. The spa is a little jewel box, the staff were nice and welcoming, and there’s a steam room and sauna for guests, another luxurious perk!
Is it kid-friendly? I didn’t travel with kids, but the hotel is clearly well accustomed to younger guests. The Club Lounge is a huge help for families, the location makes getting around easy, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I did see a few families during my stay, so I’d say yes—very.

Be sure to… Go for a morning walk in Central Park. It may seem obvious, but it is literally on your front doorstep, and I constantly find that the park is full of endless discoveries, despite living in New York my whole life. I realized I’d never really explored the park’s southern corners until staying here. If you’re visiting in winter, skip the crowds at Rockefeller Center and go for a morning skate at Wollman Rink instead: it’s a great mix of serenity and chaos, looking up at all of the skyscrapers while being completely surrounded by nature.
Parting words… I’d recommend this hotel to first-time visitors, families, groups, solo travelers, and anyone who wants easy access to both uptown and downtown. It was an incredibly comfortable home base for two days and made the whole city feel really accessible.
