Best for… Shila is a small boutique hotel-meets-gallery in the Kolonaki neighborhood.
The vibe… Well-appointed and on the reclaimed artsy side, the Shila is definitely a place of character. It’s filled with antiques and comfortable velvet couches, has a great curation of photography, and the lighting is very moody. It’s more like staying in an apartment in that you have to be buzzed into, or use your key. Photographs in the hotel are for sale, and they have a collection of local designers as well as a few select pieces of clothing in the rooms for sale as well. At first I found this weird, but either you like it—as our daughter did—or you stop seeing it.

The room… We needed a room that could accommodate three, since our daughter was joining us, and they had the perfect solution: the Artist Atelier suite. It was almost like an apartment—a proper bedroom, a large living room that actually had a sitting room within it, a small kitchen, and two full-size bathrooms—and they turned one of the daybeds into a bed for her. One of those bathrooms had a big wooden rope swing in it, which we found amusing.

The food and drink… We left too early in the morning to experience their breakfast, which is included, but I know they have a focus on local small producers.
Parting words… The Shila is located on a pedestrian street, so your taxi won’t be able to drop off/pick up in front—you’ll have to walk a half a block.
Date of stay… August 18, 2023
