Hakama, traditional Japanese trousers known for their dramatic wide legs and structured pleats, have been worn for over a thousand years—first during the Heian period as practical garments for horseback riding, before they were later adopted by samurai as formal attire. Their silhouette is still enduring today, and is so perfect for travel: comfortable for long flights, transitional climates, and full days of walking when you still want to look polished. Below, we’re sharing some classic styles and modern interpretations that borrow from the spirit of hakama, which feel as comfortable as loungewear but can easily be dressed up.
Sou Sou Hakama Fuji Pants – These make a good case for pleats on both the front and back of a pant.
Toast Pleated Wrap Culottes – Made from organic cotton denim in a deep indigo dye, these have a great wrap waist that ties in a bow for an adjustable fit.
Eiyo Kimono Hakama Wide Leg Pants – A more traditional version with lots of volume and deep-set pleats all the way around.
Toast Stripe Linen Cotton Barrel Leg Trousers – The barrel-leg shape gives just enough volume without feeling overwhelming if you’re new to the wide-leg look.
Kimura Kami Womens Hakama Pants – This traditional take has very pronounced pleats and a flowy silhouette that moves as you walk.
Muji Hakama Pants – The lightweight double-layered fabric gives these structure without heaviness, and the stretchy back waistband and side zip make them especially comfortable for long travel days.
Toast Full Length Loopback Jersey Trousers – “Jersey trousers”… aka sweatpants. But the great color, drape, and back pocket make these feel a cut above your average sweats.
Rue de Tokyo pants – These are so roomy that it’s hard to see where one pant leg ends and the other begins.
Techwear Hakama “Chimata” pants – The technical fabric these are made from is designed to hide signs of wear, so you can pack light and wear them on repeat.
Crepe de Chine Hakama Pants – Cut in fluid crepe-de-chine, these have a dressier feel, and are lightweight and wrinkle resistant, so they’re a great pair to take you through day to night.
Toast Cotton Twill Wide Leg Trousers – Inverted pleats at the waist help add volume, and the structured cotton twill holds its shape without feeling rigid.
Tanaka Hakama Trousers Beige – A more tailored take with a defined center crease and adjustable band at the back to get the fit just right.
Good Company Hakama Trousers – Deep pleats and a wide leg that echo traditional hakama but feel super modern. The high-density wool twill adjustable back belt to adjust the waist.
Free People fisherman pants – Definitely not hakama, but these feel adjacent with the fold over waistband and extra wide leg.
Nest Robe Brushed Linen Cotton Easy Fit Flare Pants – Carly came across this brand in Kyoto and loves their brushed-linen pants, which are warm enough to wear almost year round, but still feel breathable in peak summer.
Atelier Delphine Parissa Pant – The thicker velvet drapes so beautifully and comes in both lilac and chocolate colors we wouldn’t normally opt for.
