The Mekong River delta in southern Vietnam—home to floating forests, rice paddies and fruit plantations, and glassy corridors where women collect water lilies to sell at local markets. Last year we felt so inundated by the storm of gift guides that started to flood our inbox the day after Halloween that we skipped one altogether, opting to reshare our favorite gift guides instead. But we are big believers in the power of objects, scents and tastes to transport us to faraway places, so this year we’ve been slowly curating our list of travel gear and ephemera that we’re the most excited to give (or receive!) this holiday season. In the dry season, Segera stands out like a tuft of wet green moss on a stone. Once a cattle ranch, it was secured and rewilded a decade ago by Jochen Zeitz, a German businessman and conservationist who pioneered a model of sustainable ecotourism called The Long Run. He transformed Segera according to these rigorous standards, installing solar power, rainwater harvesting, waste recycling and even a geothermal system to cool the wine cellar, housed in a striking brutalist cement silo. Zeitz is also a renowned collector of contemporary African art, and sculptures are scattered around the property, including a bronze by a South African artist of a man journeying by boat down a long, riverlike pool. Tucked in a small, craggy cove in Northern California is the Harbor House Inn, an 11-room property doing their part to preserve the natural beauty of the Mendocino coast.
